Shirley Wrast, 91, of Cañon City died peacefully February 6, 2018. She was born December 21, 1926 to Earl and Freida Hicks in Chicago, Illinois.
She is survived by her brother, Bob Hicks (Lynnette), daughters-in-law, Roxy Wrast and Caroll Flynn, along with four grandchildren Lisa Bryan (Rickey), Mark Wrast (Monica), Jenny Oakley (Christopher) and Jon Wrast (Whitney). She was blessed with four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Breeyn, Tanner and Trevor.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Jesuel (Chizzy), her two sons Richard and James, and her parents.
Shirley spent her early years in Libertyville, Illinois, where she met and married Chizzy on August 24, 1946. After Chizzy’s retirement, the couple relocated to Cañon City where they lived out their lives.
Shirley’s passions revolved around her family, church, card playing, canning, gardening and her love of chocolate which was fostered by her loving neighbor Dick Poyner who also became a devoted caregiver after his best friend, Chizzy passed. She also loved the gulf coast, sunshine and fishing. She and Chizzy wintered in Corpus Christi, Texas for many years. While in Corpus, they made lasting friendships, cherished memories and ignited a passion for gulf fishing in others. Shirley was an amazing mother and grandmother, as well as an accomplished cook, who left behind many wonderful recipes which will always be cherished.
Shirley will remain forever in the lives of those who had the good fortune to be close to her. She had many wonderful friends and neighbors who were important to her throughout her 91 years here on God’s earth. She departed her earthly home peacefully under the loving care of the Hildebrand Nursing Home staff. Her comfort was also made possible by the help and support of Frontier Hospice of Pueblo, Colorado.
We ask that you celebrate her life, as we will, and not mourn her death. We will mourn the loss we feel, but will celebrate her being with her heavenly Father. Her family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the First United Methodist Church, 801 Main St, Cañon City, CO 81212 or the Talking Books of Colorado, 180 Sheridan Blvd., Denver, CO 80226 which she enjoyed for years due to failing eye sight and her love of reading.
